What is Spiritual Direction?

I describe spiritual direction as one person accompanying another on their spiritual journey. In stillness and quiet prayer, we ask the Spirit to direct our attention to God’s loving presence in your day to day life and the invitation to respond to that presence.

I sometimes find it helpful to mention what spiritual direction is not: it’s not counseling, mentoring, discipleship, teaching, or coaching. In spiritual direction, the way you are- or in some cases are not- experiencing God in the present is our focus. And though I may sit in the ‘director’s chair’, I do not give directions. My role is to simply pay attention with you to God’s actions in your life, and together we will look to God as the True Director.

How often do you meet?

Most people agree that once a month works well.

How do I know if this is for me?

Some people come to spiritual direction when they feel “stuck” spiritually, or when they have trouble finding God. Some people have church hurt or are burned out or some other spiritual life pain. Others come to spiritual direction regularly simply as part of their own spiritual practice. You don’t need to be in any certain place on your spiritual journey to come for direction. All I ask is that you bring your honest self.

I offer a free 45 minute consultation where I can share more with you about the practice of spiritual direction, what a typical session would be like, what you can expect, etc. I will do my best to answer your questions, and from there we can discern if this is a good next step for you.
